| Maria Chapdelaine Paintings by Rajka Kupesic
Louis Hémon’s famous novel, Maria Chapdelaine, has been published in twenty-three countries since it first appeared in 1916. It is as closely associated with Canada as Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables. Unfortunately Hémon did not witness the international success of his book – he was killed in a train accident in 1913, a few months before the book’s first publication. Kupesic’s first book, Claire’s Gift was awarded the Mr. Christie’s Book Award for Best Children’s book in 2000. Kupesic was classically trained as a ballerina, and danced for many years in Europe while developing her art. Her work has been shown in numerous galleries worldwide. It has been featured in magazines in France, Canada, and Japan, and in major collections around the world.
