Pike Lake, 1929

“This painting, a result of the trip north of Superior with Carmichael, Harris, and Jackson, is a larger watercolour copy of a 10 x 12 inch oil sketch.  Pike Lake was fairly small and located just north of our camp.  After breakfast each morning, Frank and I would walk to the lake and, and coming over the rise in the lower portion of this sketch, we would invariably catch sight of three or four moose feeding in the shallows.  One can see in this mid-October painting that the trees were at the peak of their colour.  Shortly after I completed this sketch, we endured that terrible night storm during which our tent almost blew away.  In the morning, not a leaf was left on the trees.”
