Winter on the Don, 1926

“This watercolour of the Don River was painted in mid-winter in Hogg’s Hollow, on the outskirts of Toronto, toward the northern limits of Yonge Street.

I was very much attracted by the play of light and shadow on the snow as the sun filtered through the birch trees. Due to the bitter coldness of the day and the changing light, I brought the sketch home half-finished and completed it in my studio.”
