Markham, Ontario
Built in 1887, the Segwun, then a paddlewheeler, sailed the Muskoka lakes from early spring to late fall carrying freight, mail, and passengers to the villages and resorts not served by the railways. In the 1970’s, the Segwun was restored and on June 1st, 1974, Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau officially launched the refurbished Segwun as a cruise ship. The Segwun is the oldest operating steamship in North America and allows passengers to “step back in time” to the nostalgia of Muskoka’s past. In 2001 and 2002, the Royal Mail Ship Segwun was voted by Attractions Canada as the Best Large Attraction in the Province of Ontario. Al Darling brings to his viewers in his limited edition print, “Gravenhurst”, a part of our history and heritage seen in an artistically new way. He highlights a portion of the image by printing it in colour and leaves the remaining image in black and white. Mr. Darling who resides in Markham, Ontario has photographed extensively in Ontario, Quebec, Eastern Canada and Europe and has been the recipient of many photographic competition awards.
