Tom Thomson will be the first Canadian artist to be given a solo exhibition
at the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. Sixty of Thomson’s
paintings will be on exhibit starting September 10th.
The nine-week long show has been in the planning for over two years,
and is part of a four-exhibit deal between the Art Gallery of Ontario
and the Hermitage. The Hermitage is one of the greatest art institutions
in the world, with more than three million works of art.
As quoted by AGO director, Matthew Teitelbaum, “They see Tom Thomson
as the icon of Canadian art.”
The last Canadian exhibit held in the Hermitage’s main building,
which was once Catherine the Great’s Winter Palace, was a small-scale
Group of Seven show in the 1970s.
