Tom Thomson Sells for Nearly $2-Million

Pine Trees at Sunset
Pine Trees at Sunset – Tom Thomson

This small oil sketch (about the size of a sheet of copier paper) sold for $1,957,500.00 including buyer’s premium at Sotheby’s Canada spring auction held today in Toronto.  This surpasses the Thomson record set by fellow Toronto auction house Joyner Waddington for the $1.46-million sale of the panel Spring Thaw last November.

Experts believe Thomson created this panel in either 1915 or 1916.

“He painted paintings that people have always loved,” said Sotheby’s Canada president David Silcox, who pointed out that this piece was rare for several reasons, including its vertical orientation and the fact that Thomson had signed the panel, something he didn’t often do.

Last week, Thomson’s panel Tamarack Swamp sold for $1.15 million at Heffel’s Fine Art spring auction held in Vancouver.
