Tom Thomson Oil Sketch Sells for just under $1Million

Tom Thomson’s oil sketch Burnt Area with Ragged Rocks painted in Algonquin Park sold for $934,000. (including buyers premium) at Ritchies Fine Art auction held in Toronto on Monday November 20, 2006, which is a record breaking price for a Thomson oil sketch.  This oil on panel measures only 8 ½” x 10 ½”.

Before Thomson’s untimely death in 1917 he produced about two dozen canvases, which include some of his enduring national icons such as Northern River and the Jack Pine, and over three hundred small panels painted in oil – oil sketches, as they are usually called.

Emily Carr Establishes Record Price
